Where Legends Took the Stage
Starlight's StoryLong before Starlight became a preservation effort, it was one of Southern California's most celebrated outdoor entertainment venues. Originally built as the Ford Bowl for the 1935–1936 California Pacific International Exposition in Balboa Park, the amphitheater was designed by acclaimed architect Richard S. Requa with acoustics by Dr. Vern O. Knudsen, whose work also helped shape the legendary Hollywood Bowl. With more than 4,000 seats beneath the stars, Starlight quickly became a destination where world-class entertainment met one of America's most beautiful urban parks.
Over the next seven decades, Starlight welcomed millions of guests and hosted an extraordinary range of performances—from Broadway musicals and grand opera to symphony orchestras, ballet, comedy, and nationally touring concerts. The stage was graced by legendary entertainers including The Rolling Stones, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, Jim Croce, Roy Orbison, Bonnie Raitt, The Doobie Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Ramones, Beastie Boys, Elvis Costello, Los Lobos, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and many more. It also served as the longtime home of the San Diego Civic Light Opera, where generations experienced productions such as The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Hello, Dolly!, and West Side Story beneath the open sky.
For decades, Starlight wasn't simply a theater, it was where San Diego celebrated. Families introduced their children to live theater. Students crossed the stage at graduation. Friends gathered for unforgettable summer nights filled with music and laughter. Visitors from around the world discovered a venue unlike any other, nestled among the gardens and museums of Balboa Park.
Today, Save Starlight is working to write the next chapter of that story. Our goal isn't simply to preserve an extraordinary piece of history; it's to once again create a place where future generations will experience their first concert, first standing ovation, and first magical evening beneath the stars.
